Latest Catch of the Week: Opossums
July 29, 2016
This past week our technicians were called to a Des Moines home with an opossum problem. Upon arrival, our technicians discovered that an opossum had made its way into the home through the pet door. As you can see in the photo, the opossum then headed into the bathroom and decided to 'nest' in the corner with a bath towel. Though this situation is definitely unique, it is not that uncommon.
Opossum Appearance
An opossum adult is typically the size of a large cat. They are known to have long, gray hair in addition to a scaly tail.
Opossum Behavior
Opossums tend to prefer making their home within existing structures, like garages or under buildings. However, they are also known to occasionally burrow within squirrel's nests. When it comes to determining their nesting spot, opossums choose a location based on the close proximity to a food source.
Signs You May Have an Opossum Infestation
Many homeowners do not realize they have an opossum infestation until they encounter the pests themselves. If you begin to notice them around your property, specifically digging through garbage, or possibly in your attic, you could very well have an opossum infestation.
How to Keep Opossums Out
Similar to raccoons, the easiest and most effective way to keeping these pests away from your home is to close off any entry points and eliminate potential food sources. Keep your garbage bins in an enclosed area, seal any cracks or pet doors around your property, and pick up any fallen fruit from trees on your lawn.
