Catch of the Week: Fungus Gnats
February 5, 2016
This week our technicians were called to a Des Moines home regarding fungus gnats. The homeowners had noticed an abundance of these small flies surrounding their windowsill as you can see in the photo. Learn more about these pesky critters and how you can keep them at bay in your home!
What are Fungus Gnats?
Adult fungus gnats are grayish black in color and look similar to mosquitoes. They have long legs, a set of transparent wings, and can grow 1/8 inches long.
Where do Fungus Gnats Congregate?
Fungus gnats are often found near abundant, damp indoor potted plants and near drains. They feed on root hairs, fungus, and any other organic materials. As a home or business owner, you most likely will begin to see them flying around your houseplants, near windowsills where potted plants are near or drains. These pests are not strong fliers, therefore, when watering your plants or turning on your sink, you will notice them emerge and become a flying nuisance.
How to Detect Fungus Gnats
You most likely have fungus gnats if you notice sudden wilting, poor growth or yellowing of your plants or swarming near drains. Plants that are prone to fungus gnat problems include:
- African violets
- Geraniums
- Poinsettias
- Carnations
Removing Fungus Gnats
Many homeowners attempt different tactics to eliminate fungus gnats such as drain cleaner and bleach. When this doesn't work, Preferred Pest is called. After we detect a fungus gnat problem, we check all indoor drains and potted plants around the home for signs of the pest. If we determine that drains are the primary source, we will apply foam treatment to the problem drains. The foam will eliminate scum, odors and organic build up in which the fungus gnats feed upon. If our technicians decide the fungus gnats are coming from the potted plants, we usually recommend the homeowner either replaces the soil or applies a soil insecticide to directly kill the gnats.
