Catch of the Week: Bald-Faced Hornet Nest
June 10, 2016
This past week Preferred Pest was called to a Des Moines home that reportedly had a bald-faced hornet's nest on the property. Upon our arrival, it was clear that the homeowner had a serious problem on their hands. As the most aggressive hornet found in Iowa, bald-faced hornets will sting quickly and repeatedly if they are disturbed. As you can see in the photo, the nest is perfectly hidden and protected from wind and rain under the roof of the structure.

Bald-Faced Hornets Appearance
More closely related to yellow jackets than to other hornets, bald-faced hornet bodies tend to be black in color with their face marked with white. These hornets are around 15 to 20 mm or more long and are larger than yellow jackets.
Bald-Faced Hornet Habits
The bald-faced hornet is most active throughout the day, and the adults will typically consume liquids that consist of sugar, such as juices or nectar. As for their larvae, adult bald-faced hornets will bring back certain solids, such as insects, for them to consume.
How to Detect a Bald-Faced Hornet Infestation
When it comes to their nests, bald-faced hornets will typically build in an area that will remain undisturbed. Areas they prefer include porch overhangs, buildings, bushes, trees, etc. Nests tend to be constructed out of chewed leaves they've pasted together and will look like the nest in the image above. As a home or business owner, it is important to be careful when trimming bushes or trees on your property in the case that a nest is hidden within. If disturbed, bald-faced hornets will not hesitate to attack.
