Cockroaches
The American cockroach is the largest of the house-infesting roaches. Other common roaches are the brown-banded, German, smokey brown and Oriental cockroach. They can be transported into homes and apartments in boxes and papers, inside furniture and even in non-protected containers from food-handling establishments. Roaches can foul food, damage wallpaper, books and clothing, and produce an unpleasant odor. Some home owners are allergic to roaches, and the pests can contaminate food with certain bacterial diseases that  result in food poisoning, dysentery, or diarrhea. Cockroaches can cause childhood asthma.
Spiders
Local dangerous spiders are the black widow spider, brown recluse spider, sac spider and tarantula (normally purchased as pets). Spiders can often be beneficial in eliminating other insect pests, however, infestations of spiders can be annoying and create the constant necessity of clearing out webs and dead insects. There have been increasing complaints about webs and fecal specks dirtying home vinyl and aluminum siding. Many insects rest on white colored siding. Certain spiders sit there, waiting for an easy meal, not needing to spin a web to help catch and trap their prey. These spiders defecate on the siding, leaving undesirable specks on the paint or other finish. These spiders should be removed or killed.
Ants
Crazy ants are attracted by sweet or greasy foods. Carpenter ants destroy wood and are usually found in damp wood. Pharoah ants are very small, difficult to control and nest throughout structures. Fire ants nest in soil and in voids like hollow doors and walls but are fortunately only rarely found in Iowa.
